Seven Layer S’more Flambé!

September 3, 2007

(I can’t believe I forgot to take a picture. So sorry.)

My task for the annual family clambake yesterday was to make a dessert with a ‘fire’ theme. Baked Alaska came to mind as did Cherries Jubilee but that’s just not good ‘crowd’ food. I needed something that was suitable to serve the hordes and masses by the bonfire.

Bonfire you say? Eureka! S’mores! Ok, now factor in the crowd… buffet style graham crackers, marshmallows and pointy sticks gets way too tricky.

Enter the Seven Layer Bar. A crunchy graham cracker base, check. Lovely chocolate, check. I think we’re on to something. But we need marshmallow. Can you bake a marshmallow? Yes, you can (but only for about 5 minutes or so). So I made a Seven Layer Bar base minus the coconut. During the last five minutes, add a generous layer of mini-marshmallows. Turn on the broiler for a minute or two to achieve a delectable golden crust on top.

And for the pièce de résisitance… set it on fire! Well, we tried anyway. I found a website that said you could soak a sugarcube in an extract (alcohol) and set it on fire. Only one cube really got any flame, the rest left a clump of singed, boozy sugar on the top. Oh well. It was the thought that counted. It’s hard marrying into a family of pyromaniacs.

It does sound hard, but it also is probably never boring!

Pictures? I’m an idiot. The batteries died in the camera. Besides, hard to take pictures as I’m burning my fingers trying to light boozy sugarcubes. Oh well.
