Picky, picky, picky

I should have known that it wouldn’t be magic but I hoped for better with the Behr Color Smart. I know I’m being super picky (color geek that I am). Admittedly, it does give a better idea than a paint chip. This is a before photo of my future sewing room in the new house.

Here’s the palette I chose and the after.

Both walls are supposedly the same color. It’s called “Haze” and my current living room is painted this color so I know what it really looks like. Maybe it’s trying to simulating lighting and shadow. I think the wall over the fireplace is brighter and peachier than it should be. Overall, I’ve found I have to choose a color several shades darker than I want in order to approximate the color I’m actually looking for.

Here’s a before photo from my in-laws new house. It’s been completely renovated so the walls are freshly plastered. I hoped this would work better.

This is the after.
The picture above is a slightly cooler green than the color in the palette but you certainly get the picture. As I’m writing this post, I have to admit that it doesn’t really look all that bad.

Choosing paint color is definitely tricky, even with all the new computer software that allows you to do what you’ve done here. The advice I usually give my clients is to either paint a large swatch of the color on the wall or a piece of poster board (most paint companies now sell small paint pouches for $3-$4) and live with the color for at least a week. Pay attention to how the color looks at various times of the day as it certainly changes with the light.

No matter what, paint is one the cheapest things a person can do to change the look of an entire room.

    Good luck!

I’m a sucker for green… those walls look like the color I put in my living room. I painted them gray first! Dunno why… like, a gray living room? I am so not an interior decorator, but like to admire other’s efforts.
